HISTORY

HISTORY OF UNIVERSITY OF CABUYAO

The Pamantasan ng Cabuyao (PnC; also known as the University of Cabuyao) is a prominent university located in the city of Cabuyao, province of Laguna, Philippines. Established to provide quality education to the youth of Cabuyao and nearby areas, it has grown to become a significant institution in the region. The university was founded through the vision and leadership of then-Mayor Proceso “Etok” D. Aguillo, who championed the need for a higher learning institution in the city. This vision was realized with the enactment of Municipal Ordinance 2003-059, which was officially approved on April 16, 2003.

Origins and Early Beginnings

Prior to the establishment of the Pamantasan ng Cabuyao, there existed a satellite campus of the Laguna State Polytechnic University (LSPU) within the premises of Cabuyao National High School. This campus was established through a memorandum of agreement between the LSPU president and the municipal mayor of Cabuyao. The partnership began in 1993 and provided educational opportunities for local students. However, the agreement was only valid until March 31, 2003, after which significant changes occurred that led to the birth of PnC.

Challenges Leading to the Creation of PnC

In late 2002, discontent grew among students and faculty members due to alleged mismanagement and leadership concerns within LSPU. A strong protest against the leadership of the LSPU president emerged, spearheaded by key faculty members and student representatives. The protest was led by Charlemagne G. Laviña and supported by other faculty members including Rosalia B. Pre, George Barundia, Christian Hernandez, and Melissa Dimaculangan, along with a non-teaching staff member and several students from the LSPU-Cabuyao campus.

Establishment of Pamantasan ng Cabuyao

Understanding the necessity of a local college to continue providing higher education, the municipal government, with the support of faculty leaders, took proactive steps to establish a new university. Anticipating the closure of LSPU-Cabuyao, faculty members, including Charlemagne Laviña and Frank Parao, worked closely with the mayor's office to develop a new institutional framework. They sought guidance from the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM), which was considered a model for local colleges in the Philippines.
